The Oregon Trail

Here the Playmobil family is traveling along the Oregon Trail. Off to make a new start in a new land - if they make it. We've been studying what it was like to travel the real Oregon Trail for the past month. We finished off with lunch at Lacamas Community Center on Saturday where an actress / story teller told all about what folks would have experienced along that journey.

Little J enjoyed the food and seeing both his Grandpa and Great Grandpa who were there with us for lunch.

Beef stew, corn bread, biscuits, sourdough bread, apple pie, gingerbread cookies, peach cobbler, tea and coffee.

Cousin T is checking out her cornbread. She and MN decided they liked that best.

When we arrived, each table was given a jar of cream to start shaking. Half way through the lunch we had made whipped cream. By the time we left, we had butter! The kids said today, as they had some of the butter they made, "It needs salt!" How life must have tasted different on the Oregon trail! The woman telling the stories brought along many artifacts and things they would've used back then traveling the trail. CT enjoying seeing and hearing the Jews Harp or Jaws Harp. Now he wants to play that instead of the guitar. When we got home I showed them how to make a button pull toy out of a large button and thread. That'll make for a cheap Christmas present next year - they all wanted to fight over the one button! The next day my husband and I took our boys to one of our favorite stores - Cabelas.

The Back Country Horsemen were all set up in the parking lot with their tents, campfires, horses etc... and this covered wagon! How neat for us since the kids had just spent the previous day learning all about covered wagons!

Cabelas also had some civil war reenactors there and we watched them demonstrate how to shoot off the old cannon . They all duck and cover their ears when it goes off with a big puff of smoke. It was loud. My husband, CT and Little J. pose in front of the mountain covered with taxidermed animals. One of their favorite things to see at Cabelas. Little J begged for 3 days to go to "Bellas" with Daddy. He enjoyed it very much.
