Back in December my dad had CT over for a root beer taste test using 4 popular brands found in the grocery store. If you missed reading about that one on my mom's blog, Spot on Cedar Pond, click HERE. CT ( and Dad ) had such a great time tasting all those root beers that they planned to hold a taste test again - this time with gourmet root beers! They also thought it would be helpful to have a third taste tester and judge so they brought in a fellow root beer lover, our nephew who lives just a few miles down the highway from our house.
Friday evening, after a meager spaghetti dinner ( meager because they needed to save room for all the root beer they'd be drinking ), they lined up the competitors: Henry Weinhards, Crater Lake, Thomas Kemper, Capt'n Eli's, Stewarts, Rhode Island Molasses and Teddy's.
Let the judging begin! Each root beer was carefully tasted and then rated. Comments were made and written by each taster. This photo looks quiet - but it was anything but. These boys could hardly contain their laughter and pure enjoyment of the thing most 11 and almost 11 year old boys love ... root beer.
The root beers were rated on foam, smell, carbonation and taste and were placed in this order:
- Capt'n Eli's ( Sweet Vanilla Taste )
- Stewart's ( weak head, smelled like candy cane, sugar taste. )
- Henry Weinhards ( Long lasting, good root beer smell, creamy, mild taste. )
- Teddy's ( Strong root beer smell, smooth, much like A&W )
- Thomas Kemper ( Foam goes away fast, weak smell, little carbonation, not very sweet.)
- Rhode Island Molasses ( Dark brown head, strong medicine smell, mild root beer flavor.)
- Crater Lake ( sorry, but it tasted like brown sugar syrup, bad aftertaste and both boy's comments read " Not a root beer." )
The Winner!
Of course, after a night full of drinking root beer - there's only one thing to do .... have root beer floats! These guys couldn't keep a straight face but here they are trying really hard. I've just remembered I have a photo of these two doing the same thing only at age one year old. Looks like not much has changed and I'm pretty sure there's a photo 10 years from now, 20 years from now and 30 years from now that will look pretty similar!
Thanks Dad for making a wonderful memory for these two!

This was so much fun to watch, They really couldn't contain themselves and I thought they would hurt themselves from laughing so much!
We are thinking a summer root beer tasting / barbecue is in order too, how many more root beers do you think there are?
We should check out World Market - they might have some neat ones?
Maybe I could find some here and bring them in September for one of your tastings. This sounds like they had a really good time.
Love the expressions on their faces. So cute! I bet they had a real blast!
Looks like they did have lots of fun! Sounds like a neat thing to do.
The pictures show just how much fun they were having. I bet their faces hurt from all the laughing! I remember the first contest and as you say, I'll bet they are still doing this 10 years from now and having just as much fun.
That looks like a whole lotta fun.
What a fun thing to do! Makes me want to get an early bday present for CT!!! =)
