The Unwrapped Gift

Over 30 years ago - I believe I was about five years old - my brothers and I piled into our car with Mom and Dad to go spend Christmas at Grandma and Grandpa's house.  All of the cousins would be there ( I was the oldest ) and the Aunties and Uncles and we'd get candy and lefse!  After everyone had arrived and we'd had dinner, Grandpa gathered us all in the living room to pass out presents that were under his tree.  Gifts brought by all of us to give to others in the family.  There were quite a lot of us so usually each person would draw a name and then buy just one gift for that person.  I remember seeing the presents sitting under the tree - all in fun colored wrapping paper , waiting for Grandpa to read the names and pass them out.  He started calling out the names of my cousins and brothers and handing each of them one of the wrapped gifts - then he called my name.  It was on this little wooden folding chair - the one in the photo above.  I thought for sure he'd read the name wrong - surely mine would be a more 'childish' gift in wrapping paper!  My mom said "Autumn, that one is for you!"  I remember then, I did something HORRIBLE.  I stuck out my bottom lip, slouched down and said "I don't want it - it's not wrapped."  My parents and the wonderful Auntie that had bought me the chair tried to coax me into seeing how wonderful the gift was - even though it hadn't been wrapped.  I pouted some more, I think I even cried.  I got taken to the 'Blue Room' by my mom and was punished for my attitude and lack of gratitude.  She told me how kind it was for my aunt to think so highly of me that I was old enough to get a more grown up gift and what a special thoughtful  gift it was.  After a few moments, I started to feel bad, really bad.  I didn't want to hurt my Aunt!  I actually liked the chair!  It wasn't until we got home that night that I truly realized how awful I'd acted.  I know I was made to apologize that day to my Aunt for my behavior, but I'd like to tell her now, how much I've enjoyed that present... so much that I've taken wonderful care of it - it's taken some abuse, some rough little boys  ( and girls ) have sat in that chair, I love that it folds to fit nicely under a bed when space is needed, that dolls fit perfectly in it as well, I like the creak the seat makes when you sit in it and after 30 + years, it's still around, looking just like it did that day long ago.  I'm sure we can't say the same for any of the other gifts given to the kids that year.  I don't even remember what any of them were!  I've loved this chair, and my children love this chair and it will probably be around for my grandchildren too!  Just another reminder, it's what's inside that counts, not the wrapping and the thought and time that my Aunt took while selecting this gift for me.
This next memory is of another gift given at Christmas time - ten years ago.  Our family along with our church group, was visiting a local nursing home, we all went to sing carols to the residents.  Our daughter, KN, was only 1 year old and in her stroller at the time.  An elderly man in a wheelchair was following us through the halls, listening to us sing.  As we were leaving the building, slowly, carrying our 3 yr old and pushing KN in the stroller, the old man was wheeling to the door and everyone started saying goodbye's and Merry Christmas's.  No one really took notice of him.  I heard this weak, raspy voice calling - saying " I have something, hold on just a minute, I have something!"  He was waving his hand, very weakly and trying to be heard over all the voices. I said to my husband "Wait, I think that man wants to say something. " Then I said it again to my Mom, because everyone just started walking away out into the dark to their cars.  The three of us stopped a moment and listened carefully to the man. He said "I have something - something for the little one."  Then he turned around and wheeled himself back into the building and up the hall and was gone.  We didn't know if we should wait around or just assume he'd gone back inside for good.  We decided to wait.  After a few minutes, the man came wheeling back to the door - out of breath from trying to hurry his chair along, he had this little stuffed lamb ( much less worn than it is in the photo ), he wheeled up to us with a big smile on his face and handed the lamb to our little KN.  "This is for you, Merry Christmas!"  he said to her.  Of course, she smiled and held tight to the lamb and we gave him our thanks and wished him a Merry Christmas and watched him wheel slowly back into the building.  That has always been such a special gift to me - and to KN, that man, who didn't have much at all, being so thrilled to be able to give something to a child.  He made our Christmas that year and I hope we made a little part of his.  I tell her this story every year and she likes to hear it.  The memory that comes with the gift.

"Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, (2)  saying, "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?  For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him." (11) And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him.   And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh."  Matthew 2:1,2, 11

It's Beginning to Look a Little Like Christmas

It's both fun and tiring decorating the new house for Christmas.  Trying to figure out new places to put old decorations.  It's really nice living within about 5 miles from 5 different tree farms.  Didn't have to go far to cut a really nice tree at a cheap price!

Looking in the window - this is what you'll see.  Tater is keeping watch over the fire in the stove.
The people that built this house spent last Christmas here and they put a tree in the front windows - so tall it reached just under those very top windows.  We looked for a super tall tree but they were all so wide at the base that it would have been Christmas tree in our living room and nothing else!
No snow yet and only a couple of mornings with a little frost.  Lots of rain as usual.  So glad to have a house to keep dry in!

What Fun You Can Have With A Village!

Every year we set up the miniature ceramic village at Christmas time.
This is one of the kids' very favorite things to get out. I always tell them, set it up how you like it and then leave it be! After we got it all set up this year Little J tried very hard to contain his little hands and just look with his eyes but very soon there he was, making all the people talk, and acting out little scenes. Then he asks me 'Mom - does the village set come with a gun?" "No, it does not come with a gun. " I answered him.
A few days later I noticed this man carrying hay - had broken off his feet.
And this girl ... had come off her ceramic snow stand away from pushing her puppies and fallen into a snow drift. I called out " Who broke the village people?" Little J hops up to the counter and says " They were hunting the bears."
That would be these bears here - " The guy was hunting the bears and then he fed them hay and then he got broken." Hmmmm... must have been a bear attack in the middle of the night. Luckily, the village doctor owns a huge bottle of super glue and both the man and girl have been reunited with their feet and are going to make a full recovery.

He Wants Duck Cookies

I know we're just into the first week of December but I feel about 2 months behind on everything. I decided that we'd spend yesterday and the day before getting out the Christmas decorations, putting up the lights on the gutters, watch some Christmas movies and make some cookies. We started with gingerbread. We have a bucket full of cookie cutters - lots of Christmas themed ones but all Little J wanted was to use the duck shaped cutter.
He's a good little elf, helping cut out all the cookies - we did get several different shapes out of the dough but that duck one was his favorite.
He watched them bake, sooooo excited to try his ducky.
Then as soon as it had cooled a bit ... he bit it's little head off. "Hahaha! My duck one is good Mom!"

Holiday Festivities

Christmas eve Santa stopped by our house around 9:15pm. CT had already fallen asleep. I didn't know that our girls were up watching out their window in their bedroom. They ran out to the living room yelling "Santa is here!" Little J went and opened the door for Santa so he wouldn't have to come down the wood stove chimney.
Santa gave Little J his favorites, peppermint and chocolate. Little J really likes Santa.
Here's MN with 'Grandma' on Christmas night. MN is balancing her new Zhu Zhu pet on her head and entertaining Grandma.
Little J had crashed on the couch and pretty much slept through all of Christmas evening while CT, Papa and my husband played the new Nintendo Wii that my dad had bought himself for Christmas. We got Dad 'The Big Game Hunter 2010' game for the wii as a gift so the guys tried most of the night to hunt animated animals on the TV - only to be 'killed' by Cougars and Bears multiple times.
MN was excited to call up her cousins over on the other side of the mountains where they were enjoying Christmas day. Here she chatted away with her girl cousins about what they all got for Christmas.
The next day, the 26th, the kids all had fun playing with their toys over at our sis and brother in law's house. Here are Little J and his cousin of the same age. The two of them actually asked to have their picture taken by the tree. With gummy bears, chocolates and play swords and basketballs - these two didn't stand around long enough for too many other photos.
Little J also wanted a picture taken with his little girl cousin who just learned to walk. When I said " Kids, time to get ready to leave!" Little J said " Awwwwww!" He could have stayed all night I think.

Oh Christmas Tree ~

The kids and I went not far down the road to pick up the tree this year. Keeping things simple. That's what I'm all about. I had to go with the Grand fir because of the smell. As we set it up in the tree stand the kids all picked a few needles and broke them in half to smell the very fragrant citrus scent. They were happy. Ever since Tom and I have been married we've always put on red & white lights but we always had multi colored lights when I was growing up so I did colored lights for the kids this year. We only have young kids in the house for so long. I can do the fun kiddie stuff now and do the coordinated, classy stuff when they're grown. Heck, I still put on cartoons to watch while I eat my lunch so maybe the colored lights are really for me?
Oh, our little guy was thrilled to have a Christmas tree. He calls it a Ho Ho tree ??? He helped put on his ornaments and begged his daddy and me to lift him up to see the ones up high. Just watching the joy on his little face as he looked at each ornament ( including the moose poop rolled in glitter and hand painted from Alaska - one of his favorites! ) and sat on his wooden rocking horse just staring up at the lights and setting his wooden train underneath ... that's what I"ll remember. That's what makes me happy.

Our Happy Holiday

Christmas Eve! We spent the day at home just relaxing and getting some of the food prepared before hand for the next day. Santa showed up at our door ( we had a fire going in the wood stove ) and MN heard him come in. All of the children had gone off to bed and the boys had already fallen asleep but MN and KN ran quietly out to the living room to spy on Santa!
MN asked if she could sit on his lap for just a minute as Santa handed her some candy.
KN headed right out the front door to see if she could find his reindeer. She said she couldn't see them but also did not see any car in sight that might have brought Santa to our house so maybe the reindeer were hiding? She was extremely grateful that Santa brought her a bottle of Tabasco this year instead of candy. Now she can take it along where ever she goes to spice up her food just the way she likes.
Little J was sleeping away as Santa laid a little toy doggy on his tummy.
I was awakened around 6 am Christmas morning by loud children's voices as they excitedly opened their favorite boxes of cereal which I always surprise them with on the dining table each year. My husband was also very loud as he tore up newspaper to get the wood stove re started.
Then the opening of gifts began. Little J really enjoyed looking at his new pop up puppy book!
All four posed for me in front of the tree later after the paper and boxes were cleared away. The girls are in their new dresses which they LOVE. My husband rated this a very good Christmas already as he only had ONE toy that was wired to it's packaging! All of the others came out very easily. I think the toy makers are getting a clue or maybe more of them have become parents themselves who've had to devote hours of their Christmas morning to unlocking, unwiring, ungluing, cutting, ripping and tearing toys out of their boxes.
Right about 1:00 pm the family started to arrive! We were so excited to be having my husband's sisters, brother in laws, Dad and step mom, nieces and nephews and my folks over for Christmas dinner! Of course there were more gifts to exchange and KN unwrapped something at the top of her wish list - a Singer sewing machine for young beginning seamstresses!
Look at this sweet newest addition to our family! Our new little niece born just after Thanksgiving to my husband's younger sister!
We sure got a kick out of watching these two little men experience Christmas! Here they both check out possible ornaments to pull off the tree.
All seven of the 'grandkids' to my husband's parents were in the house so we had to gather them and snap a few photos. Wonderful company, wonderful food ( too much! ) We felt so privileged to have them all make the drive out to our house to spend their Christmas with us. A truly enjoyable day! I'm now really enjoying catching up on all of your Christmases through your blogs and spent yesterday rearranging and organizing the girl's room to create a sewing / crafting corner for KN and a baby doll nursery / kitchen set area for MN. May the last week of 2009 be a blessed one for you all!

Christmas Cookies and Parties!

This December we have had every Saturday and Sunday filled with parties and family gatherings. We've really enjoyed getting together with all sides of our growing family - starting off with a visit to a longtime childhood friend of mine at her house for lunch and the chance to see how beautifully she decorates for the holidays is always a treat! Then that night cousins from my side blessed us with a visit for dinner at our house while the first snow started falling! We bundled up to drive the few miles over to my husband's cousin's house the next day for more food and fun. The following weekend we were able to feast on a huge buffet of foods ranging from sushi, bbq chicken and Chamorro shrimp patties to fried sweet potatoes, taco dip and cakes hosted by some extended family related to my cousin who've relocated from the Pacific Islands to the Pacific Northwest. The day after that, I accompanied my husband to his Christmas work party. It felt odd to leave the kids behind at my parents ( where they had more fun than we did! ) but it gave us the opportunity to do some shopping for them before the party.
This Friday, some dear friends invited KN, MN and I over for fun filled night of cookie baking and decorating! Their house was adorned with colored lights as we pulled up and their tree was so twinkly! ( Top photo). MN helped make sugar cookie dough and KN made peanut butter cookie dough that afternoon before hand.
Then the baking got under way! Hmmm, do you think we made enough? MN is holding up her favorite cookie and we're waiting for the rest to cool before we can start decorating with colored frosting, sprinkles and chocolate chips.
KN was in her own corner getting creative. She spent a little more time on detail and design with her cookies than the rest of us did.
Look at all those beautiful cookies! KN discussed the possibility of some day opening up a bake shop with Rachel and Rebecca.
Last night we had a fantastic time at my dear Aunt Joni and Uncle Tom's home for my mom's side of the family's Christmas party. After a great dinner around her beautifully set table, we had a bowling competition on the wii! CT took home $5.00 for 1st Place in the children's bowling division. The highlight of their night was playing Mario Cart with my cousin's three boys who are truly entertaining!
Of course there was the opening of a few gifts ...
a gift exchange between the adults ( draw a #, choose a wrapped gift, don't like it? Steal someone else's! )
And time to wind down, visit and snuggle with the family. We are thankful for a wonderful time and chance to get together with our dear family!
