This is Mt. Rainier. At the top of the mountain is Columbia Crest which is at 14,410 feet. We don't live far from this mountain but haven't been up to visit it in 5 years! Yesterday turned out to be a perfect day to visit the mountain.
( The steps at the new visitor center. ) The weather was perfect, the flowers were blooming and it wasn't too crowded when we arrived at 11:30 am. We ate our lunch there and walked one of the trails called " Dead Horse Creek Trail".
Some of the trail was still covered in snow.
Someone had made this little snowman to greet us along the path.
MN REALLY wanted all of us to have our picture taken making funny faces. So we took HER picture making funny faces.
110 years ago in 1899, President McKinley signed the bill that established Mount Rainier National Park. To celebrate the park's 110th anniversary they were waiving the entrance fee this weekend and everyone was allowed to visit for free!
On September 27th, 2009, filmmaker Ken Burns will release his newest documentary on PBS called "The National Parks: America's Best Idea." It is a 6 episode - 12 hour series telling the story of the creation of a national park system that now includes 391 units representing much of our nation's shared natural and cultural heritage.

Beautiful picture are you trying to make me homesick? I miss that mountain sooo much. I love the hikes and picnics and camping. I have some pics of our kids visiting the mountain in summer with snow. Thanks for sharing
I never take for granted that 'our mountain' is visible to us every day there is no cloud cover, fog, or rain, and just a short drive from home. Remember when KN, as a very little girl would call it " my mountain"?

What a great trip! We haven't been up in a while either. Hoping to do so soon. The girls went hiking with Mike and Michelle on Monday but they only went as far as Cougar Rock to hike. They said it was very busy.
