Dad ( My husband's ) got a new house and needed skirting built up around it so My husband and his Uncle Jimmy's family spent all of Saturday working hard getting the concrete block skirting built. My husband came home late and the next morning he and I and the kids went back out there to join Dad and Uncle Jimmy's family and help finish the job as well as help move belonging into the new house and unpack. Little J loved every bit of the day since it involved loud saws, lots of dirt, barbecue and Papa!
My husband's sisters and their families came on out too and Uncle Jimmy ( a super carpenter and good at all kinds of construction ) got them involved in the building by giving a quick demo on laying block and then leaving the guys working on their own. He believes in a hands on approach to teaching. The two little guys think nothing is better than a Papa who has giant dirt piles at his house to play in.
The other kids got into a fort building competition and pretty soon Uncle Alex had gone over to help the boys team build their fort and the girls, thinking that wasn't quite fair, recruited Uncle Jimmy and Papa onto the 'girls team' to help construct theirs. Real wood and nails!!! Here are the girls with their fort, built onto one side of an old porch. Ummmm, notice the rug and nice chairs!
Here are the boys with their fort. I like it's rustic look and use of natural wood. Auntie Nette was the judge and decided that since the girls did a little interior decorating on theirs as well, they were the winners.
As evening approached the cooking got underway, Papa (Dad) on the grill, Grandma ( Mama ) Jennifer inside cooking up a bunch of vegetable dishes, Uncle Jimmy on the outside propane stove cooking up some chicken (where I had to pay close attention so I can replicate his dish when we go out camping in a few weeks) and Auntie Cari making up 20 cups of red rice. ( Uncle Jimmy in the green shirt dishing up some food for our brother Eli and baby girl.) Wowee! Was it all smelling good and taste testing was a tough job but we all managed to do a bit here and there.
Outside the little ones ( and the older ones too ) were treated to a private concert by Uncle Jimmy's kids who are very talented guitar players and singers.
They continued playing songs while more and more family members arrived and more and more food got cooked up and we all enjoyed a super feast. No one wanted to leave but the next day was Monday and all had to be back to work.

Even though I know a lot of hard work was involved, it's nice to see the family together and the food and music look great. Wonderful pics of the children playing.
It's so great to see the whole family working together to get stuff done! I like the fort too! Boys can be very creative!
What a fun time for you all, and it is so nice to have family that helps each other. Plus, the best thing of all is Tom's Dad has a new home!
