Reading our local newspaper a couple of months ago we saw that there is an annual 'Federal Junior Duck Stamp'
competition for children of all ages to send in artwork of waterfowl and the nationwide winner will get their art made into a US postal stamp! Our son CT loves to draw and his favorite things to draw are animals and nature. We thought it would be a good experience for him to draw his favorite breed of duck and enter the
competition. We saw that last year's winner was a teenage girl who did magnificent oil paintings that looked like real life photos. CT knew he couldn't compete against that level of expertise but still had fun drawing his male and female Wood ducks and got some good practise. Everything he draws is freehand and he prefers to use colored pencils and charcoal pencils.
He was surprised and thrilled when we got the mail this week and there was a packet addressed to him. Inside was this certificate, rosette ribbon, his original drawing, an engraved pin and a letter notifying him of his award for 'Honorable Mention'. There were 200 entries from WA state this year and the first place winner is a 16 year old girl who's art has been sent on to WA DC to compete on the national level. CT didn't expect to receive anything for entering the
competition so this was really neat and he plans to keep entering for as long as the
competition is around. We were really proud of him and as we read the list of 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners from our state, his dad said " That was really cool, it's too bad you were competing against an entire art school full of Japanese and Chinese kids! " Their artwork is truly extraordinary. If you wish to check out the

Until then CT will continue drawing the things he loves while gaining more and more expertise.
Our other little artist in the house is KN, who enjoys creating things out of fabric and out of clay. She truly has unique ideas. I've shown one of my favorites of her clay creations here ~ she says it's a scene from a Pokemon cartoon, I think it looks like it would be fit for a tiny fairy.

Congrats to him! What a wonderful surprise for him to receive in the mail.
I enjoyed seeing the artwork of both CT and KN. I think it is great that they are so creative and that you encourage them to express themselves that way. Great job!
Of course I know they are very talented children, and CT and KN, keep up the good work! Your Grandma will proudly hang your art up anytime!
